If you're trying to have a baby — or PLAN to someday — you need to hear this. Because the conversation about fertility and cannabis? It has been almost entirely focused on women. What SHE's eating. What SHE's taking. What SHE needs to stop doing. But a major study just flipped the script. Men who smoke weed weekly are DOUBLING their partner's risk of MISCARRIAGE. Not because of anything she did. Because of HIM. This is MORNINGS IN THE LAB. I'm Keith, he's Jon. Show 3027. Thursday, April 16th, 2026. Coming to you from BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS — where this research STARTED. Let's GET INTO IT.
Here's why this story matters RIGHT NOW. Cannabis is EVERYWHERE. 24 states plus Washington D.C. have legalized it recreationally. 18 MORE states have medical use. And as of 2022 — more Americans report daily marijuana use than daily ALCOHOL use. Let that sink in. We are in a cultural moment where weed is treated like it's HARMLESS. Socially acceptable. No big deal. Everybody's doing it. But Boston University just published a study that says — hold on. Because if you're a man and you're trying to start a family? This habit could be DESTROYING your shot. And your PARTNER is the one paying the price.
Here are FIVE things you need to bring to the table today. ONE — The study looked at MORE than 1,400 heterosexual couples trying to conceive across the US and Canada. Real people. Real data. Massive scale. TWO — Men using cannabis at least WEEKLY had DOUBLE the miscarriage risk for their partners versus non-users. Not a slight uptick. DOUBLE. THREE — The effect was STRONGEST before 8 weeks gestation. That's the window most people don't even know they're pregnant yet. FOUR — Researchers controlled for the woman's OWN cannabis use. The male use was the INDEPENDENT risk factor. This isn't about her. FIVE — Lead researcher Alyssa Harlow explains the mechanism: THC attaches to cannabinoid receptors in testicular tissue and DIRECTLY damages sperm. This isn't speculation. The biology is right there.
Now let's zoom OUT — because this isn't just one study. The science on cannabis and male fertility has been building for YEARS. A 2019 review of 48 studies linked cannabis to lower sperm counts, lower concentration, and ABNORMALLY shaped sperm. A 2020 Jamaica study — 229 men — found even MODERATE use created a 35 TIMES higher likelihood of misshapen sperm. A 2025 Jordan study — 113 men — found cannabis users had significantly REDUCED sperm motility versus non-smokers. Duke University found male rats exposed to marijuana had altered sperm — AND their offspring showed BRAIN ABNORMALITIES. Learning issues. Memory problems. Mood disruptions. The damage can carry FORWARD. One contradictory Harvard study found previous smokers had HIGHER sperm concentrations — so the science isn't perfectly settled. But the weight of evidence points in one direction. And the experts who work with fertility patients every single day? They're not confused. Dr. Natalie Crawford — endocrinologist, appeared on the Huberman Lab podcast — called cannabis QUOTE — "extremely harmful" to sperm production and quality. She said in IVF labs, when embryos stall at Day 3 and couples end up with NOTHING? Nine out of ten times — the MAN was using cannabis. And had previously DENIED it. Think about that. A couple goes through the emotional and physical HELL of IVF. They lose their embryos. And the reason was sitting right there the whole time — unreported. Crawford also called it — and this is important — QUOTE — "one of the most alterable factors in this country for enhancing fertility results." ALTERABLE. Meaning — YOU CAN CHANGE IT. That's the whole POINT of this conversation.
So what do you DO with this? If you are a man — and you are trying to have a baby, or you plan to in the next few years — THIS IS YOUR SIGN. Stop treating cannabis like it has no consequences. You are not just making a personal choice about your own body. You are making a choice that affects your PARTNER'S body. Her health. Her grief. Her loss. And the federal illegality of marijuana has made large-scale research HARD. There are gaps in the data we haven't been able to fill because of how this substance is classified. But the data we DO have is pointing strongly in one direction. Dr. Harlow says — consult your physician and adopt a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. That means real conversations. Honest ones. With your doctor. With your partner. Not just assuming everything's fine because it FEELS fine.
And here's the deeper question this raises. How many men are watching their partners go through the heartbreak of miscarriage — and not considering they might be a factor? We talk constantly about what WOMEN need to do to prepare for pregnancy. But men? Men get a pass. And that ENDS when we start talking about it. REAL talk. No filter. Just the truth. If you're smoking weed weekly and trying to be a father — the research says that combination is DANGEROUS. Not just to your sperm count. To the LIFE you're trying to create.
